14 long years!
Hard to come by, for RMC teams.

By WJO

The OUA banner has proven to be a pretty elusive prize for RMC over the past 32 years.  Not since the 1991 Men’s curling team, coached by, 16522
Darla Boyle has a college varsity team brought home a legitimate OUA team championship.
The RMC women, coached by 8662 Al English, also won the overall fencing championship in 1990.

Last weekend at the OUA Championship, hosted by Brock University, RMC, coached by A 134 Ms Patricia Howes, captured another Women’s Championship Banner.

RMC was admitted to the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) in 1973.

“Redmen” teams had been competing in the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Intercollegiate Association since 1955.  Once women arrived in 1980, the Lady Cadets competed in the Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association (OWIAA).  In 1997 OUAA and the OWIAA amalgamated to form one association, Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

So, this was only the third university level banner in 32 years.  Two to one, for the women!  Well done ladies!

Quotation of the week

In command and leadership many qualities, attributes and techniques are required -- including drive, force, judgment, perception and others.

But nothing can replace the inspiration and lift that comes from commending a job well done.

 Fencing: I Year Perspective
By:  24032 Chantel Lemay

RMC’s women’s fencing team has made history, winning the prized Kay Aoyama women’s championship trophy for the first time in fourteen years!  The men and women’s teams had remained at the college throughout reading week for an intensive training camp in preparation for the championships.  The two teams left Friday the 26 of February to travel to Brock University in St-Catharine’s Ontario, where they would be competing over the weekend.

Soon after the competition began it became obvious that all the teams’ hard work had paid off.  The women’s team was able to secure the banner thanks to team first place finishes in women’s sabre, women’s foil and a fourth place finish in women’s epee.

In the individual category, Marilyne Lafortune (23022) won the Maitre Ken Wood trophy thanks to her impressive 15-7 gold medal victory in women’s foil.  Marie Alamy (23012) captured the bronze medal in women’s sabre while team-mate Katryne Fontaine (23701) finished fourth.

The women’s team placed first overall in the Ontario University circuit, beating hometown rivals and four-time defending champions, the Queen’s Golden Gales.

On the men’s side, the men faced stiff competition placing 5th in men’s sabre, 6th in men’s foil and a heartbreaking 2nd in men’s epee.  One of the many highlights was a spectacular first place finish in the men’s individual foil event by Alex Prymack (23959), a first year at the college.

The RMC fencing teams are comprised of a great group of dedicated athletes who work hard all year, and now their hard work has finally paid off.  They represented the college well and forced everyone to notice their presence on the piste.  The women’s team banner will proudly hang in the old gym, serving as inspiration for next year’s team.

Great Job, Team!

CDN Taekwondo Nationals in
Vancouver, BC

Another record year for the RMC Taekwondo team, as 8 members attended the Canadian TKD Nationals in Vancouver this past weekend as part of the 12 person CF team.  The event included approximately 250 competitors from all across Canada and was used to select the team for the upcoming World Championships.

All of the CF fighters performed very well, demonstrating the strong potential of the team.  Overall, the CF team earned 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal.  The following is a brief rundown of the RMC team members’ results at this event.

2005 Battlefield Tour.  What a trip!
By 23227 TP

During Reading Week, cadets flock to the far ends of the world seeking some R&R.  Some head south to escape the dreary Canadian winter while others make their way home to enjoy a home cooked meal.

However, one particular group of cadets, along

with select staff, crossed the Atlantic to pay homage to fallen soldiers, sailors and aircrew from the First and Second World Wars.  Nineteen cadets participated in EX-SOUVENIR, a tour of First and Second World War battlefields and cemeteries in France.

Pictured are five players who will not be back with the hockey team next year because of a thing called graduation and completing their post secondary degrees.  All five played had very significant roles in the success of the Paladins this season.

Tyler Middlebrook, (MBA) (2nd from left ) was not only the leading RMC offensive player, he also captured the OUA scoring crown with 41 pts in 24 games.  Mike Todd, (MA) (center) a former team-mate at U of T was a strong two way player who was an Assistant Captain and a leader in the PK department.  Louis-Michel Charland, (MBA) (1st right) returned to the lineup this year after missing all of last season with a bad concussion.  He tallied a very impressive, 20 points in 21 league games.  The other Assistant Captain, Adrian Hartley (2nd right) (IV Year Arts) and Jamie Routledge (Ist left) (IV Year Engineering) were strong on the “D” all season.  Hartley picked up a total of 10 points in his first year ever as a defenceman.  Routledge, a throwback to the Tim Horton style of playing defence, added muscle to the blueline; he amassed 70 minutes PIM and was the RMC enforcer keeping enemy forwards at bay, game in and game out.

He also provided timely offense in key games.

Jesse Bruni

Another fifth year player not back will be Jesse Bruni.  Jesse only managed to compete in four games this year due to injuries.  He was expected to add a big offensive element to the “D”.  His presence was sorely missed and it was through similar injuries such as his, that the team failed to win a play-off game.

All six players will be tough to replace, however, with the new attractions program in place, hopes are high that the team will have another successful year next season.

William to train with Harry at Sandhurst

Reprinted from - The Sunday Times - Britain
March 06, 2005

written by

PRINCE WILLIAM wants to enlist for military training at Sandhurst at the same time as his brother Prince Harry.

He intends to begin at the Royal Military Academy in January 2006, arriving as Harry starts the third term of his one-year course.

Courtiers hope that the presence of his older brother might improve Harry’s chances of adapting successfully to the armed forces.

One source said: “Life is about to get much more serious for both boys. It should be easier for them to go through it together.”

Until now it was understood that William, 22, might take a year off after completing his studies at St Andrews University and thus enrol as a Sandhurst cadet only after Harry, 20, had left.

Instead, the sources say, recent events have pushed him into “getting a grip”. The marriage of his father to Camilla Parker Bowles will close one chapter in his life, while the appointment of a former SAS officer, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, as the princes’ first private secretary, points forward to life as a working royal.

At a meeting this month, palace officials will urge the PCC to consider reimposing special rules for media coverage of the princes during their stints at Sandhurst. However, they are not optimistic.

It also emerged this weekend that William is about to lose the special protection from media intrusion that he has enjoyed since April 1999 under a deal with the Press Complaints Commission (PCC).

The guidelines, drawn up by Lord Wakeham, then PCC chairman, effectively destroyed the market for paparazzi pictures of either of the princes throughout their years in full-time education.

However, since Harry lost this protection with the end of his education, he has been the subject of a string of embarrassing reports, detailing a scuffle outside a nightclub and culminating in the photograph of him wearing a Nazi uniform for a fancy dress party. Clarence House has now been warned that the PCC agreement will lapse when William completes his degree, in the history of art, at St Andrews in June.

Update on the George Washington Skylark

The skylark was perpetrated in Feb. 1957 by several members of the class of '56 and one Queens man, initials G.S. They also raised the British flag where the proclamation was posted and reclaimed the USA in the name of George 3rd.The FBI investigated the incident with their usual lack of success.

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
