Issue 010/2005

John Kim once again picked up the gold medal in men's poomse (patterns) out of a group of 10 competitors.  This is the fourth year in a row that John has won this division.  John also picked up the silver medal in the men's lightweight sparring category out of 26 competitors.  John won his first 3 matches (7-6, 1-0 in overtime, and 3-2) against some very strong and talented opponents to make it to the finals.  The final match was a very close and exciting 9 minutes that ended 17 to 14.  John then had to fight one last time for the silver medal in the repechage round, winning 7-5.  This is the second year in a row that John has won the silver medal in this category.  His performance in both poomse and sparring was simply outstanding and definitely his best performance to date.

Joey Ring and Trevor Fenton both won their first round matches, only to be eliminated during their second round matches.  Trevor’s second match was a very close one against a previous national champ, who ended up finishing in 2nd place this year.

Nadia Kang lost her first match to the eventual gold medal winner, putting her into the repechage round.  In this round Nadia lost out in a very close match (10-9), while demonstrating her strong spirit in the third and final round.

Jean Francois Moreau, Jean Michel Racine, Michael Cheung, Eric Kuehnle were all eliminated in the first round, but all lost in very close matches.  Again, all of the fighters did an outstanding job, gaining invaluable experience and demonstrating their potential for the future.
