Dr. Kirk protégé: High School Principal.

Andre Labrie, wife Laurie and three children, Devon, Luc and Alyssa

Andre entered RMC in the fall of 1983 under the RETP program.  He was one of a group of hockey playing student-athletes who were attracted to the college by the then coach of the varsity hockey team, Dr. Wayne Kirk.  Along with such notable players as Steve Molaski, Don Gillingham, Brian Collict, Tim Lanan and the Harris twins, Andre helped form the nucleus of a very strong RMC hockey team over his four years at the college.

After graduating from the RETP program as an engineer, Andre initially worked as a mechanical engineer for the Canadian Standards Association, Welding Bureau.  After eight months, he returned to Kingston to work at UTDC Lavelin.  Andre worked for two years with UTDC on the Military Truck (HLVW) project.  At this point in his life, Andre and his wife Laurie decided to switch career paths, returning to university to obtain Bachelor of Education degrees at Queen’s.

They began their teaching careers together in Kingston in 1990.  It was at about this time that Andre became the unofficial general manager of the ex-cadet hockey team.   The team competes annually in the Queen’s Engineering Tournament and up until recent years against the college varsity hockey team on ex-cadet weekend.

Andre and Laurie’s house in Barriefield Village (designed and built by Andre), known affectionately as “Chateau Labrie”, is the social headquarters during gatherings of the ex-cadet team.  Andre and Laurie are always very generous in allowing many of the team’s miscreants to “crash for the night”, saving many of them from the certainty of sleeping in the streets.

While Laurie interrupted her teaching career to be at home with their children, Andre quickly became a rising star within the education system.  In succession he became one of the youngest vice-principals and principals in Ontario.  Andre is working currently as the Principal of La Salle Secondary School in Kingston, a position he has held for the past 4 years.

Andre has always been an ardent supporter of the college and in particular a great friend to the varsity hockey team.  Most recently, he was the master of ceremonies at the 2003 Legacy Dinner that honoured RMC’s hockey past.  Andre and Laurie continue to live in Barriefield Village, with their three children: Devon; Luc and Alyssa.
