RMC Honours Top Athletes

By Patrick Kennedy
Whig Standard - Friday, April 01, 2005

Marilyne Lafortune, RMC’s fine female fencer, picked up some last-minute things before departing today for the military world fencing championships in Italy – namely trophies.

The 21-year-old Montreal product dominated the hardware handout at last night’s athletic awards ceremony before a Yeo Hall assemblage of 250 students.

The electrical engineering student, the linchpin of a Paladins fencing team that captured the school’s first Ontario University Athletics title in 14 years, won three individual awards including the Kelly Gawne Memorial Cup as top female athlete. She added the HRH Prince of Wales Cup and was named top fourth-year cadet and fencing most valuable player.

2585 Sir Edwin Leather  KCMG, KCVO, LLD
(Telegraph News  06/04/2005)

Sir Edwin Leather, who died yesterday aged 85, arrived in England with the Canadian Army in 1940 and liked it so much that he stayed on after the war, becoming a highly popular Tory MP.

Although he never held political office and was forced by ill health to retire after 14 years,

he was chosen to chair the first party conference after Edward Heath became prime minister; Leather was later appointed Governor of Bermuda, after the murder of Sir Richard Sharples.

Popular member of Red & White Soccer Team, 7240 Don MacLennan,
Succumbs to Leukemia

I regret to inform you that one of our numbers is down. On 3 April, 2005 Don Maclennan left a body no longer fit to live in following the ravages of leukemia.

His funeral will be held on 7 April at 1430 hrs in the Presbyterian Church on Old Kamloops Road in Vernon, B.C. I had word of his death from his widow Mary from their home at 7003 Lakeridge Court in Vernon. V1H 1P5

It is a long time ago now that I went around to the Hotel Dieu in Kingston with 7113 John Deyell to visit

7164 Michael Evans who had been seriously hurt in a car crash. So much so that John had thought to take along a stainless steel keepsake on which he had had inscribed - if I have it right -

"DUM VIVIMUS VIVAMUS" which he said meant "While we are living, let us have life."

Even at the time I remember thinking, "very wise and very suitable."

Requiescat in pace, Don.

Constable Tony Foreman,
late of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force

I should also say that the Red & White Match lost one of its most ardent supporters on February 5 of this year with the death from cancer of our friend, Constable Tony Foreman, late of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, 31 Division.

Tony put many ex-cadets to shame with his constant advocacy of RMC and its purpose, despite the fact

that he had never been there until he came with us to support the teams in the Red & White Match.  Mind you, perhaps the sight of the Lady Cadets did that to him.  He will be very much missed on the touchline, in the mess and generally . . . aprés.

7099 Roger MacGregor.
Coordinator, Match rouge et blanc at RMC Kingston

NECBC President and CEO, Appointed to ACSUS Advisory Board
Paul Raymond, 15435, class of 1986
President of the Board for the New England Canada Business Council
based out of Boston, Massachusetts.

Washington, DC, March 23, 2005 – The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) is pleased to announce the appointment of New England Canada Business Council (NECBC), President & CEO, Paul Raymond, to the ASCUS Advisory Council.

Mr. Raymond is Senior Vice President for CGI in the greater Boston Region, located in Andover, MA.  Founded in 1976, with headquarters in Montreal, Canada, CGI is among the largest independent information technology and business process services firms in North America. CGI and its affiliated companies employ approximately 25,000 professionals. CGI provides end-to-end IT and business process services to clients worldwide from offices in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific as well as from centers of excellence in India and Canada. Website: www.cgi.com.

“ACSUS is pleased to connect in this way with the NECBC,” said George Sulzner, President, ACSUS. “The aligning of these two organizations will help to promote economic interaction between New England and Canada as well as add substantially to ACSUS’ goal of promoting knowledge and understanding about Canada in the United States.”

“I am honored to be a part of an advisory council with these individuals that have not only been extremely successful in their own careers, but have also been instrumental in furthering the relations between the US and Canada,” said Paul Raymond, NECBC President and CEO.  “Being a member of this advisory council will open the NECBC and both New England and Canada to tremendous opportunities to further trade and

relations between the two countries.  Very little locally is known about the incredibly strong and large trade that occurs between New England and Canada.  Hopefully this will help to bring that to the forefront and get more local interest from both sides in considering conducting business in their neighbours’ country.”

The New England-Canada Business Council, Inc. (NECBC) was formed in 1981 to bring together businesses and individuals with an interest in the relationship and, more specifically, New England-Canada political, business and cultural issues. Today, the Council's membership is composed of business leaders from a wide range of sectors including banking, law, consulting, energy, and high technology, as well as government and academic officials and individuals with links to Canada. Membership in the NECBC is open to all with an interest in stimulating the growth of New England-Canada ties. Website: www.necbc.org .

About ACSUS

ACSUS was formally established during a conference held at Duke University in 1971. Until 1975, the Association was managed through the Canadian Center at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University. Between 1975 and 1984, ACSUS was an affiliate of Meridian House International. In 1982, through the generous assistance of the Exxon Education Foundation, ACSUS established its secretariat in Washington, D.C., and in 1984, ACSUS became completely independent and relocated to the National Center for Higher Education; the relocation was due in part to the Association's rapid and dramatic growth and the assistance of the William H. Donner Foundation. After thirteen years at One Dupont Circle, ACSUS' sub-lease was terminated and the Association relocated to office space in the historic Sun Building in downtown Washington D.C. in February 1997.  In 2004 ACSUS returned to Dupont Circle and is currently located in the Embassy Building in the heart of the neighborhood’s think  tank community. Canadian Soldiers Battle Alongside 13th MEU Marines at TRUEX, MAGTFEX 205
Submitted by:  13th MEU
Story by Cpl. Andy J. Hurt
www.marines.mil

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (April 6, 2005) -- In an average training environment, patrols and combat tactics can become monotonous. But in the high-speed world of expeditionary work-ups, combined with joint training efforts from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), things become a bit more interesting, eh?

Soldiers from the 3rd PPCLI flew south for the duration of the Fighting 13th’s Training in an Urban Environment and Marine Air-Ground Task Force exercises March 17-April 3 at Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville, Calif.

Shock and Awe

“This blows our exercises away,” said 2nd Lt. (pronounced “Leftenant”) Matt Dawe, 8th platoon commander, C Company, 3rd Battalion, “the realism is, for lack of a better term, breathtaking.”

Dawe and the green warriors of the north took part in every event tailored for U.S. Marine combat operations. From security and stability operations to cordon and knock ops, the soldiers had their boots on the ground and their rifles at the ready.

“The training has been so worthwhile,” said Dawe. “The troops are loving every single minute of it. It’s awe-inspiring.”

Dallaire Now a Senator
By JOHN WARD  CNEWS, March 24, 2005

As a soldier, Romeo Dallaire followed orders from government. Now, in his incarnation as a senator, he's looking forward to have a say in such orders.

The 58-year-old retired general, who lost his mental equilibrium and eventually his military career to the horrors of the 1993-94 Rwandan genocide, was named to the Senate on Thursday by Prime Minister Paul Martin. Dallaire says he relishes the idea of getting inside government instead of preaching from outside.

"That's one of the fundamental reasons I accepted," he said in an interview. "Now I've been given an opportunity to get into entrails of government in caucus and the like.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to bring a more specific influence into decisions that are being taken."

Harding and Burgess are studying with the help of Canada's military, which offers post-secondary training for jobs from vehicle mechanic to doctor.  Harding is in

In exchange for free education, their first job will be part of their mandatory military service, which is usually three to five years.

Defence Chief to Alter the Way Military Works
Hillier wants focused leadership under U.S.-style CanadaCom banner

Mike Blanchfield
The Ottawa Citizen

Thursday, April 07, 2005

Canada's new defence chief wants to revamp the command structure of the Canadian Forces under a new "CanadaCom" banner that unites the army, navy and air force under leaner, more focused leadership similar to the U.S. military's approach.

Defence Minister Bill Graham told a military symposium in Ottawa yesterday the upcoming defence policy review will make that key recommendation, which he said is the brainchild of his new chief of defence staff, Gen. Rick Hillier.

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
