Honourable Barney Danson, former MND discussing his near blindness.

Reaction to the Announcement

"We are very excited about the return of men's rugby as a varsity sport at
RMC.  When rugby returned this past fall as an intramural, it was clear that
the enthusiasm amongst the current cadets, staff and alumni of RMC was still
very strong.  With the athletes we currently have at

RMC, the success in the exhibition games we played this past year and the commitment the college is
making towards athletics, we firmly believe we will be able to field a competitive team."

Darren Cates, Director of Athletics

Note to former RMC rugby players & Rifle & Pistol shooters

It would be interesting to receive feedback from ex-cadets who played rugby and / or were members of either the pistol or rifle teams.   We will do our best to reprint your reaction in upcoming editions of e-Veritas.   William.oliver@rmc.ca

They know exams are coming. Why do they always procrastinate?

By Christopher Maughan
Kingston Whig Standard - Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Amanda Crigger’s first exam is in less than a week. She hasn’t started studying yet. Needless to say, she’s a little stressed out.

A new survey has found that in Canada, Crigger’s case is typical: One-third of university students are self-

described “crammers,” meaning they don’t start studying until three days before an exam.

Crigger, a science student at Royal Military College, says she likes to leave it even later than that: “Two days before tends to be the hard-core study time,” she says.

Time with the family...

Original article By Gloria Kelly,
Maple Leaf Volume 8, # 12

The day Vice-Admiral Greg Maddison set foot in a Canadian warship for the first time he felt at home.

Now, almost 37 years later and preparing for retirement, VAdm Maddison says he joined the CF thinking he was going to be a pilot, but that a career in the Navy is something he would not change for a minute. In early April, VAdm will step down as the Deputy Chief of the

Defence Staff, handing over the reins of a very busy shop to Major-General Marc Dumais.

VAdm Maddison said looking back he feels he has really been a part of the military family for 53 years. His dad joined the Air Force when he was two and the family moved across Canada and to Europe before he decided the make the military a career himself. Describing his acceptance to the Royal Military College as, “The biggest surprise of my life, because I never actually thought they would accept me.”

Ex Cadet 13738 Chris Hadfield…… in the cards
From CP sources   Mon, April 11, 2005

Astronaut Chris Hadfield collected NASA memorabilia, National Geographic charts and postage stamps when he was a kid, but never trading cards. And, certainly, he never imagined himself depicted on one. He didn't start out as

much of a reader, either. But now the 45-year-old mechanical engineer, jet pilot, poet and musician finds himself pictured on the front of a trading card promoting reading.

MAJOR R.C. MCLAUGHLIN APPOINTED TO THE ORDER OF MILITARY MERIT

On 31 January 2005, 90 members of the Canadian Forces were identified for appointment to the Order of Military Merit (OMM) by Her Excellency the Governor General, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.  Appointed as an Officer to the OMM is Major Rick McLaughlin, Officer-Commanding (OC) the Air Reserve Flight of 427 Tactical Helicopter Squadron (THS) in Petawawa.

The OMM was established on July 1, 1972 to recognize a career of exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by the men and women of both the Regular and Reserve Forces.  The three levels of membership -- Commander, Officer and Member -- reflect long-term, outstanding service with varying degrees of responsibility.  The number of appointments is limited to one-tenth of one percent of the average number of persons who were members of the Canadian Forces during the previous year.  Officers of the Order are appointed for outstanding meritorious service while fulfilling duties of responsibility.

Sub-Lieutenant Bayo Ajayi, (Class of 2004) led the Quebec Region to the ’05 CF National Basketball Championship. The former RMC stalwart was the team's leading scorer in the final game with 13 points; he was awarded the tournament MVP, as well as

being named to the tournament all-star team.  While playing for RMC, Bayo played four years in the “shadow” of Kevin Dulude and often his great two way play and leadership with the team was overlooked. Well done!

Educate the military – An American Perspective
By Harlan Ullman - The Washington Times
First Published April 13, 2005

For all of the Bush administration's determined efforts to "transform" the American military for the new century, one crucial ingredient has so far been deferred. That is education.

But without exploiting the extraordinary educational assets at the Pentagon's disposal, the process of transformation cannot be sustained or kept alive, well and vibrant. The Pentagon leadership has not yet recognized this necessity.

Forces hiring to mirror Canada's diversity
Defence Chief Hillier promises new vision for country's military

 Mike Blanchfield
The Ottawa Citizen - April 15, 2005

The military will launch a vigorous campaign to recruit more visible minorities to make the Forces more reflective of Canada's ethnic diversity, Defence Chief Gen. Rick Hillier said yesterday.

Gen. Hillier announced the initiative in a wide-ranging speech in which he laid out key elements of his "vision" for transforming the Forces, taking swipes at ineffective past military leadership and positioning the military as Canada's primary foreign-policy tool.

Gen. Hillier's speech comes as the Martin government plans to unveil its long-awaited international policy statement next week, which will lay out how the military, diplomats, international aid and the business-trade agenda plan to work with a single voice to  further the country's foreign policy interests.

The day World War II came to Canada's shores
By Robin Shonfield

Toronto Star April 15, 2005.  Robin Shonfield is a freelance writer based in Toronto. His father is attending the Esquimalt memorial tomorrow in Victoria, B.C.

Tomorrow, a group of veterans and friends will gather at a memorial ceremony in Victoria, B.C., to remember HMCS Esquimalt, the last Canadian ship to be sunk in naval action in World War II. The Esquimalt was sunk on April 16, 1945 just outside Halifax harbour by a German U-boat. As the world prepares to mark the 60th anniversary of VE-Day on May 8, it is important to remember that the war in Europe reached all the way to the Atlantic harbours of Canada. Despite the defeats suffered by German land forces in Europe in 1945, the German navy was still a deadly force in Canadian waters.I'm familiar with the story of the sinking of the Esquimalt because my father, Morris, was second-in-command of HMCS Sarnia, which rescued the survivors.

As an aside, 11923 Major Rick McLaughlin a recent recipient of the OMM (see previous article above) is the younger brother of the late 10972 Dale McLaughlin, RMC ’76, who later became a highly respected and well liked Squadron Commander at the College. Dale was tragically killed in an automobile accident while serving at Trenton in the early 1980s.

Rolande passes on her regrets to our French readers for no input this week.  She is off to different parts of Quebec spending a few days on a “sister’s time away”. Well deserved!

Trivia Answer:  d)  Mike Ashcroft (RMC). He is the only Officer Cadet to be inducted in to the Canadian Forces Hall of Fame. (1987)

Sharon Donnely made her mark on the national and international sports scene following graduation (1990).  The hi-light was the 2000 Olympic Games, in the sport of triathlon. (While at the College she was a star X Country runner and a star water polo player)

IV Year Officer Cadet Jerry Presley (RMC) was a member of the team that won the gold medal in the Four Man Bobsled at the World Championship in St Moritz, Switzerland 1965. Through an obvious over sight he was not inducted into the CF Hall of Fame until 2001.

The late Dennis Whitaker was a former chairman of the Canadian Equestrian Team, having led the team to a fistful of Olympic and World Championship medals over four decades. He had also been named Chef de Mission to the boycotted 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.

He fought in the battles of Dieppe, the Scheldt, and the Rhine as a young combat officer, and was one of the few Canadians awarded the DSO and the Bar for valour in the field. He was honoured as a member of the order of Canada, an Officer of the French Legion d’Honneur, and as a commander of the Belgian order of the Crown.

This is the same Dennis Whitaker that is recognized with an Award bearing his name by RMC – “The Whitaker Cup” is awarded each year to the top Team Captain of a college varsity sports team.

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
