Quotation from the Past

“Is our education adequate?  The answer seems to be no, but the fact remains that many of the students graduate with top honours and become extremely good businessmen and engineers.  The problem remaining is what to do with the reminder who find that the combination of poor motivation, poor teaching, and overcrowded schools is just a little too large for them to handle.”

Excerpt from the 1959 RMC College Review article, Education (p131 & p132)

Reunion Weekend Round Up-
Class Gifts to RMC

by Corrine Deshaw

RMC was a hub of activity as about one thousand ex-cadets and their families turned out for the Annual Reunion Weekend from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. This year’s reunion was for Ex Cadets who graduated in years ending in 0 and 5.

About 250 people attended the 8th Annual RMC Club Foundation Legacy Dinner in Yeo Hall. The theme was to honour Peacekeepers and Peacemakers, a fitting tribute during the Year of the Veteran. The keynote speaker was 6523 Terry Colfer, Class of 65, who retired from the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2003 after serving as Ambassador to Kuwait and Iran. Ambassador Colfer discussed his career in the CF and Foreign Service, noting that people in the Middle East hold Canadian Forces in high regard. 22674 Lieutenant Adam Gordon, who served in the Iraq War while on a foreign posting with the British Royal Engineers, spoke at the dinner about his experiences as a Canadian in Iraq. Over 270 Recruits ran the Obstacle Course on the Friday and on Sunday a memorial Service at The Arch recognized Ex Cadets who passed away in service to Canada.

The RMC Club Foundation was pleased to receive a total of over $680,000 in gifts and pledges during Reunion Weekend! Nearly $500,000 of this comes from the Class of ’65, to establish an endowment to fund RMC’s first academic chair. This Professorship will help establish a lecture position in Canadian Military Leadership or History, an important step as RMC grows as a University.

These other classes also donated generously, including many younger Ex Cadets in the classes of 2000, 1995 and 1990. This was the most successful Reunion yet for Class giving and shows a growth in interest in providing the Margin of Excellence. Congratulations and a heartfelt thanks to all classes on behalf of the College and the RMC Club Foundation!

Class of 2000 a gift of $1870 started the Class Fund rising. A great mark step for the 5 year reunion class.
Class of 1995 a $1100 gift, purpose to be determined soon. Happy 10th anniversary!
Class of 1990 The Class established an endowment at graduation that will fund athletics. They built this gift to $4575 at this Reunion.
Class of 1985 $4900 was received from the 20 year Class, to initiate a class gift of $100,000 to be developed over the next two reunions- by the year 2015. This is a great start. Go shake the bushes 14962 Sandy Malone!
Class of 1980 A gift of over $12,000 was received this year and the Class committed to establishing an endowment to award a benefaction for academics. The Class pledged $30,000 by years end! Congratulations on establishing a perpetual annual gift to RMC. Many thanks to 12372 Wax Johnston for leading the discussion that produced this superb effort. This shows what can be achieved with a Naval  Officer in charge!
Class of 1975 The 30 year men raised a total of $16, 385 as a gift to RMC for this milestone anniversary. They will by years end choose a purpose from a selection of three discussed during the Reunion. Many thanks to 10572 Mark Hutchings for his fundraising to classmates and in building a consensus.
Class of 1970 Of a Class Fund total of $38,100, about $21,000 will fund a new astronomical telescope for the RMC observatory dome and the remainder will be the basis of another class gift! The telescope is used in Physics courses at RMC and for club and public education. This is a vastly superior instrument than the old one it replaces. Well done to the 70’s. An unveiling of the new scope is planned soon.
Class of 1959  the new Old Brigadiers have established an endowment of $48, 260 to fund the general improvement of the RMC Library. This will be used to fund some design work for a new library when this major capital project is undertaken in the coming years. Congratulations on joining the Old Brigade. Over 100 of the class contributed to this gift!
Class of 1955 an important gift of $51,300 was received for the RMC Museum on this the Class 50th anniversary. A major improvement to the museum is planned to begin next year, to expand into the old RMC swimming pool facility.  Some serious improvements. Can now be included-to go above and beyond. Thank you to 3384 Charlie Kingston and 3356 Robin Cumine for leading this effort. Happy 50th!

Ex Cadets in the News!

We pick-up our news sources from wherever we can. Readers are encouraged to forward any item on an Ex Cadet, former staff member from any of the three military colleges.  College number & photo will make our life a lot easier.   William.oliver@rmc.ca

Over the past few months, a number of Ex Cadets have been in the news. Following are a few of the links, which we managed to find.  If you or a classmate happens "to be in the news", we would appreciate receiving the link and we will most likely publish it in a future edition of e-Veritas.

Pictured is 12723 Colonel Pat Stogran (RMC ’80) Commander CFJOG making a presentation to 15130 Lieutenant-Colonel Martin Kenneally (RMC ’85).

LCol Kenneally is the first Canadian Forces Officer ever to be authorized to wear, having been gazetted by Government House in the spring of 2005, the Korean Service Medal (KSM) for service to the Republic of Korea from 2001 to 2003.

LCol Kenneally served as a Liaison Officer to the United Nations Command during 9/11 and after.  Later he became the second CF Officer to complete the demanding Korean Army Staff College, a year long CFCSC equivalent conducted entirely in Korean.  The KSM was created in recent years and is distinct from any US

Military service or Canadian Korean War decorations or awards.

The Engineer At The Top is now at the top for fundraising.

Pembroke Daily Observer

On Friday afternoon, Major Brian Mumford of the Base Construction Engineers alighted from the tower he called home since Wednesday morning to learn the event raised over $7,000 for the United Way, blowing last year’s $6,040 out of the water.

“That’s great,” he said shortly after getting his feet back down on the ground. The major quickly accredited others for the success of the fundraiser.

“I wasn’t the one putting coins in the buckets or collecting them,” he said, and thanked everyone for their support, from those who donated to his fantastic support crew, who stuck with him during his 54 hours atop his perch.

Les "as you were", "au temps" et « hold it, hold it  gentlemen » raisonnent encore dans nos oreilles.

Dear Bill & Rolande:

I am 13108 Stan Grabstas and I recently retired from the CF after 28+ years of service on 08 Sep 2005.  On 10 Sep 2005 I started a new post with the United Nations in Afghanistan as the Chief Transport Officer for UNAMA responsible for approx 250 personnel throughout the country.  On 12 Oct, I was seconded to UNMOGIP in Islamabad to assist in the earthquake relief operations. The death toll and destruction reminds me of my time in Rwanda shortly after the massacres.  I have met a few of my fellow RMC mates in Afghanistan and if there are any in Pakistan I would like to hear from them at Grabstas@un.org.

 Cheers, Stan

Yesterday's copy (18 Oct) of Toro magazine, which came with the Globe and Mail, has an article on CF-18 Hornet pilots, and features Capt. Paul Umrysh, who graduated from RMC, Mech Eng, in 1995.

I tried the online version, and the article is called COMBAT by Mark Shatzker under the general heading "Columns and Departments".  Unfortunately it seems that this article isn't available online since it's title isn't printed in red. Is it possible they would send it to you?  The article itself is quite good, features a photo of Paul Umrysh. I plan to show it to my students, some of whom are pilots, but if you wish I will send it over to you in a week or so.

I continue to enjoy your E-Veritas; well done to you and Rolande!

Ed note:  We did contact Toro magazine and requested a copy of the article Online.  No response to date. Craig, please send the article at your convenience.

I had only a moment to speak to you, Bill but more time with you, Steve. In the College "List of Wants & Needs" I note, in your words, Steve, that the Museum Project is one which the Old Brigade should back. At the O.B. Dinner, having presented the check from the class, I did not ask the O.B. members present to get on board this project--time was a factor--as you probably know there were many delays at the dinner and I did not wish to prolong the evening any further.

However I expect, Bill, that in your next Veritas issue you will be listing and commenting on the many gifts presented by various classes to the College at the recent reunion. Assuming that this is so, could you mention that the Museum Project is now approximately 50% funded and top-up donations from members of the Old Brigade would be appreciated. I will be advising my class in my next newsletter to direct, to the Museum, their future donations until such time as the project is fully funded.

Thanks for your assistance,

3384 Charlie Kingston

It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
