Quotation of the Week

Scott Knight

“The most important factor in determining the quality of officer produced is not careful tweaking of the program; it is the quality of recruit.  We are in competition for the best minds and ambitious spirits of the next generation.  Offering a premium quality, well recognized university education is vital to recruiting, and essential to the Canadian officer corps.”

« Le facteur le plus important pour déterminer la qualité des officiers formés n’est pas la modification minutieuse du programme; c’est la qualité des recrues.  Nous sommes en concurrence pour obtenir les meilleurs intellects et les esprits les plus ambitieux de la nouvelle génération.  La possibilité d’offrir une éducation universitaire de première qualité et reconnue comme telle est indispensable au recrutement et à la formation de notre corps d’officiers canadien. »

We Need Help (Again) In Locating "Lost" Life Members

We have over 300 life members, paid in full, and for one reason or another we do not have a current address.  Please take a minute, take a quick look to see if you recognize a name or two and if you happen to have a contact number (notify them) that we are looking to update their info.

The spring edition of Veritas magazine is expected to be in the mail boxes over the next week or so.  These “lost” folks will be missing out on receiving this first class publication unless we are notified of their current address.

RMC Graphic Design Director, Gerry Locklin, has been making trips to
Kenya for a number of years during his own personal holidays. One only has to talk to
Gerry for a few minutes to realize the passion he has for this project.

On a recent volunteer/working trip to Kenya, Gerry Locklin of the Graphic Design Unit took a few minutes out to visit a school in Kijabe Kenya. By the look on his face it is hard to tell who was having the most fun, the kids or Gerry.

As a member of the Board of Directors for Bethany Relief and Rehabilitation International, Gerry, has been working for a number of years with the local hospital staff to improve communications between East Africa and the West regarding the plight of disabled children in Kenya.

Children in East Africa are suffering needlessly and dying from treatable conditions, due to the lack of

trained staff and facilities for accurate diagnosis, treatment and care. Kenya does not currently have a national children's hospital and the majority of children needing specialised care suffer or die because it does not exist.

Here in Canada it is hard to believe such conditions exist. To do nothing, is to condemn these children to a life of misery or even death. A word of caution, Gerry would relish the opportunity to speak to you about this work.

Gerry may be reached at locklin-g@rmc.ca  or 613 541-6000 x 6363

Royal Roads Welcomes Ex-Cadets – Western Reunion Homecoming 2006

Dear Ex-Cadet and Friends of Royal Roads Military College:

Some years ago, my family and I were fortunate to be able to stay in a house in the village of Knocknagoshel, County Kerry – population 200, four pubs – my kind of place!  Indeed, we rented the house from Eamon Walsh, keeper of Walshs’s Pub.  We had a lovely visit and vowed to return.

Several years later, we were in Ireland again and decided to drive through Knocknagoshel.  I walked into Walsh’s Pub and greeted Eamon.  He squinted through the haze of smoke and clearly did not recognize me from the King of Siam.  “It’s Rick Skinner, Eamon, remember?” I called out.  Smiling and still not having any idea who I was, he nevertheless responded. “Ah, you’re home again, aren’t you”?

The people of Royal Roads University may not recognize you at first glance as we greet you.  Few of us shared those years of your youth with you.  We’ve heard tales about you and some,

we suppose, are probably true -- though is a wee bit difficult to imagine exactly how all those deeds were done and no one arrested.

And then, of course, you’ve changed a bit – all for the better, to be sure.  You cut a fine figure these days, though the figure is a bit more oval in shape for some.  We want you to know that Royal Roads will always welcome you home whenever you choose to pay us a visit.  Like Eamon, we will say “You’re home again, aren’t you.”

Sincerely,

Dr. Richard Skinner
President & Vice Chancellor

Kelly Gawne Memorial Cup

Instituted in 1989, in memory of 17333 Cadet KR (Kelly) Gawne who was killed as a result of a summer training accident at Chilliwack, BC in 1988.  The cup is awarded annually to the best all-round Lady Cadet in athletics during the current college year.

Ed note:  Photo & stats of previous Kelly Gawne winners courtesy, Guy Dube, Athletic Department.

Kelly was an active and full participant with the RMC Fencing team for two years prior to her untimely and fatal accident.

Olympian, 17324 Sharon Donnelly (RMC ’90) classmate of Kelly Gawne and very first recipient of the Kelly Gawne Cup in 1989.

Ed note:  Sharon Donnelly was the keynote speaker at the RMC Intramural and Varsity Athletes Banquets in 2001.

Note from Sharon following the Varsity Athlete Banquet Speech in 2001.

I put a lot of hours into the preparation of my two speeches (including IM) because it meant so much to be able to go back to my university and tell them about how RMC had helped me. It was special that I was able to award the Kelly Gawne Memorial Trophy to the overall female athlete at the college because I had been the first ever recipient of the trophy in 1989.

The trophy is in memory of an ex-roommate of mine who had been tragically killed in summer training after our second year of school. The talks went off extremely well and it was gratifying to have cadets come up to me and say how I moved them and how I truly affected them in such a positive way. Those two days were so busy and emotionally draining but I also enjoyed them immensely.

  We get e-mails . . .

Dr. Alan Bricknell, known to those of us at Royal Roads 1948-50 as ’Bricks’, was a legend in his own time.  The absolute epitomy of a gentleman, he was always immaculately dressed and spoke with the precision of an editor of the Oxford Dictionary.

In the chem lab his spotless white coat covered a Saville Row quality three piece suit.  When he drew diagrams on the blackboard they were a work of art and, of course, no chalk dust adhered to his person.

We loved him and, in the unofficial practice of our time, he became a life member of our 48-50 term.

I last talked with him at our 50th anniversary in Victoria.

Sic transit gloria mundi.  We will remember him.

I couldn't agree more with #3201 Aus Cambon's  compliments to you both for the excellent work you do in producing Veritas via the Internet. But I also wanted to add my feelings about Mr. Coggins.

Unfortunately, because I was not inclined to take my text books seriously, I had to leave the college before the parade that Aus mentioned. But prior to that I was happiest when I was on the parade ground under the watchful eyes of RSM Coggins and S/Sgt Farley. They both were, in my eyes, the epitome of what great NCOs should be. In my years in the Army I got to know a number of RSMs all of whom were top notch, but none of them quite managed to  fill "Coggie's" boots.

Slainte.

Just a short note to thank you both again for all the good work with Veritas. You are maintaining a large community of X-Cadets and RMC and the former CMCs. I read every edition and although I am on the campus there is always something new!

Bill and Rolande

Three long-time friends who were all Director of Athletics at RMC at one time have been meeting at the
McLeod residence while Danny is recovering from a number of medical issues.
Photo was taken a few years go at the Danny McLeod testimonial dinner. (l to r)  Danny McLeod; Bill Oliver; and Jim Gebhardt.

Jim Gebhardt and I continue to visit Danny McLeod every week. Danny appears to be gradually gaining back much of his strength but he has had a setback or two over the past week.  For example, he spent another 7 or 8 hours at the Kingston hospital emergency the other day with a complication which now seems to be cleared-up.

Sheila always has fresh tea & coffee; fresh muffins & jam available while Danny, Jim and I cover a wide range of subjects during our 90 minute visit.  Readers will be pleased to know that we have the cures for: Canadian hockey; and the Leafs.

A sure sign Danny is getting better – after a slow start the first few weeks, he now wins most of the arguments!

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
