DEATH NOTICES

5824 Ywe Looper (RMC’63) - With heartfelt sadness the family of Ywe Looper announce his passing on September 25th 2006 in Calgary.  Ywe, the son of Jan and Bontje, was born in Leek, the Netherlands, on July 24th 1940 and immigrated to Canada in 1950.

Ywe graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, as a civil engineer in 1963. He served his country for 35 years in the Middle East, Europe, and North America, finishing his career as the Base Commander of CFB Chilliwack in British Columbia.

Following his career in the military Ywe continued his profession with BED Engineering and had leadership roles on the Chilliwack School Board, Rotary, and Cancer Campaign.  Ywe and Barbara moved to Qualicum Beach in 2004 and enjoyed the nature of the area, hosting friends and family, and participating in the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church.

In addition to Barbara, his loving wife of almost 40 years, left to cherish Ywe’s memory are his mother Bontje, daughter Heidi (Sylvain) Coderre, sons Ywe (Julie) and Karl (Lisa), 8 grandchildren Samuel, Paul, Camille, Marcus, Alison, Gabriela, Jessica, and Eva, and three brothers John (Pat), Jenne (Jackie), and Albert (Liz).  Also in our hearts we cherish the memory of Ywe’s father Jan and sister Aafka.

Ywe was a man of strong principle and admirable moral character.  He will be remembered for his devotion to family, contributions to the community, and Christian beliefs.  His courage and tenacity throughout his battle with pulmonary fibrosis and subsequent lung transplant will remain an inspiration to all who knew him.

A celebration of life was held at the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, 550 Pym, Parksville, BC.  Ywe’s hope for the future was to improve organ donation throughout Canada.  To honour his wishes, please consider becoming an organ donor.  Charitable donations may be made to the BC Lung Association.

4631 MACDOUGALL, John A. (RMC ’60) - In the early hours of September 26th, 2006, John A. Reunion Weekend Memories

Rooks - Sorry no names available at press time.

I enjoyed being there for my 40th, and had one special moment that I thought I'd share with you.  It is captured in the attached photo.  I was at the badging parade on Saturday, seated in the bleachers right where the recruits were formed up, ready to march on and join the cadet wing.

I looked back and somehow made eye contact with one of the recruits (who were standing easy).  She spotted my camera and nudged her neighbour to look my way.  I shot and got a beautiful photo that somehow became the highlight of my weekend. It was over in a flash, but shows their spontaneity and enthusiasm.

Thanks again for the wonderful newsletter.

A family affair

"Three Generations" Reunion Weekend was an especially proud one for the Stewart family.  Former RMC Commandant, 3173 MGen (Ret'd) John Stewart had three sons (Ken, Allen, & Greg) all former RMC graduates on hand when grandson, 24855 Alexander completed the obstacle course and took his place as a I Year cadet at RMC.

Investors Take Note…

Investors who hold appreciated stocks can now offer gifts of securities to their charity of choice and eliminate paying capital gains on their gift.  Effective May 2, 2006, donors can now donate listed securities, obtain a tax-receipt for the full market value of the gift, and be completely exempt for any capital gains tax.  The tax receipt is worth about $44 of tax refund for every $100 of shares, which can then be used to reduce the burden of taxes against other income—a win for both the investor and the charity!

If you are looking to increase your tax deductions prior to the end of this year, please be aware that the physical transfer of stocks and securities can take as much as 5 business days, and must be transferred fully to the charity prior to the end of the year to qualify for a charitable tax-receipt against that year.

For more information on how you can make a gift of stocks or securities to the RMC Foundation, contact 13731 Mr. Steve France, Executive Vice President, RMC Club Foundation,

1-888-386-3762, or local to Kingston 613-541-6000 ext. 6697.

FOCUS

Former RMC Athletic Trainer - Chuck Badcock Headed to the HoF

Elected to Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame – Induction Ceremony
scheduled for Saturday, 4 November  in Winnipeg...
He started his Sports Therapist career at RMC (1964-70).

Cadets who attended RMC between 1964 & 1970 may remember many outstanding personalities that were part of the Athletic Department staff.  Danny McLeod; Hank Tatarchuk; Doug Hargreaves; Jim Gebhardt; and Wally Travis quickly come to mind.  They along with many others were highly respected and popular with cadets.  There was one other individual who was not a PTI or a coach but to those cadets who played in any of the 21 sports offered at the college during that era – he was the man!

We speak of RMC Head Sports Therapist, Chuck Badcock.  If he were paid by the hour, Chuck would have racked up a pretty penny.  If he were paid for every ankle he taped at RMC, he would have been even richer.

What Ex Cadets may not realize is that Chuck Badcock after departing RMC went on to become one of the best known Sports Therapist in Canada.  He had a ten-year stint with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1970-80); and an 11-year gig with the Winnipeg Jets (1980-91).

Born in St. John’s Newfoundland, he served with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps for 23 years including the Korean War.  He “worked” the Winter Games in Saskatoon (1971) and Lethbridge (1975) and was head trainer at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand (1974).  He was the recipient of the CATA– 1970 & 1973 Trainer of the Year Award.  That award is given to a member of CATA in recognition of his/her service to CATA and/or outstanding contribution to the profession of athletic training.

At the end of the ’75 season the Bomber players all chipped in from their own pockets and presented Chuck and his wife, Josephine, with a two week all expense trip to Hawaii as an expression of their gratitude for the great acts of kindness he did for them over the previous five seasons.

In 1982 & 1986, he was the Therapist at the NHL All Star Game(s).  When the “Jets” embarked on a European Tour – he was the Team Therapist.  He is acknowledged as a national leader in the growth of athletic training as a profession and is a founding member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) holding the position of Secretary-Treasurer (1966-1974).  When CATA was formed in 1966 there were all of four members.  Card carrying membership to CATA exceeds 3,000 today.

When he departed RMC, Chuck left a legacy of a dynamic and caring therapist and took athletic training to new heights never imagined only a few years before he arrived at the college.  He has mentored numerous CATA Athletic Therapists who are in athletic training or medical facilities around the country.  Some of his protégées like Dr. Len Bergeron who is now a Sports Medicine Doctor at the University of Winnipeg got their start in the athletic injury business under the tutelage of Chuck Badcock.  Paddy Clayton also a well-known former athletic trainer at RMC during the 1970s ironically replaced Chuck as the Blue Bombers Head Therapist in 1980.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.

We reached him by phone last week. Chuck became an athletic trainer in a very natural way.  A former medic in the Navy and the Army he loved sports and he had over 20 years experience treating various types of injuries.  Major Danny McLeod wasted little time in convincing him that besides performing his regular RMC MIR duties he could best serve the college by acting as “Trainer” (as it was called at that time) for the 21 team sports.  Chuck recalls, “I loved every minute of it.”  He also added, “When I received the call from the Blue Bombers General Manager, Earl Lunsford asking me to become the Bombers’ trainer, I had a very difficult decision to make.”  Why? “Leaving the military college after six years was not easy and to this day some of my best memories in sports are from my days in Kingston at RMC and working with the Kingston Aces” the now retired trainer said with a trace of sadness in his voice.

From the start at RMC, Chuck's focus was on serving others.  He truly cared — not about fame and fortune, just about people.  This athletic trainer was in the corner of every cadet who suited up as a Redmen and they were in his corner, too.  Ask any one of them who were there during that time period.

Jim Gebhardt with daughter 14962 Sandy (Malone) (RMC’85).  Cadets from the 1960s and hockey fans beyond remember he was the type of player who would require often the services of the team trainer.  He took his share of hits; got cut up a few times; and suffered a number of serious bruises over the years.  The same fans have little sympathy for him though because he usually “dished out” a great deal more then he ever received!

Jim Gebhardt had this to say about his long-time good friend:

"I saw his loyalty and attention to detail as he prepared the training room for injured players’ hours in advance, and I can't forget his caring side as he rushed to tend to injured players when they called out his name in practice or a game.

Then there was the fun side of Chuck Badcock whose quick wit would fill a training room or a dressing room of players with laughter.  He had a terrific sense of humour.  Chuck truly was special in so many different ways and I am honoured to say that I was part of the same staff and team.”

Gebby also mentioned, “When the Kingston Sr. “A” Aces traveled to the Spengler Cup in Davos Switzerland in 1967 and then again to Sweden in 1968 we were playing against most of the top teams in Europe.  The games were very physical.  Chuck worked around the clock to repair our cuts; treat our bruises and have us ready.”

The induction ceremony for the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame Dinner will take place Saturday, 4th November at 6:30 PM. - Canad Inns Polo Park.  We understand that over 600 tickets have been sold for the event.  Ex Cadets in the Winnipeg area who remember Chuck may wish to check out the website   http://www.sportmanitoba.ca/recognition/halloffame.php

Chuck Badcock is 78 years old now.  He lives alone, Josephine passed away ten years ago.  He doesn’t use a computer but he may be contacted:

14 Wordsworth Way
Winnipeg, MB R3K 0J9
(204) 888-7426

He would be delighted to hear from many of those ex cadets whose ankles he taped; injuries he treated; and especially those who he had excused “from drill practice”; parades and other duties because of a sports injury.

Ed note:  There is a very fine article in the Ottawa/ Kingston area Fifty-Five Plus (Oct edition) on 5576 Leonard Lee (RMC ’62) – Doing Well by Doing Good.

We pick-up our news sources from wherever we can.  Readers are encouraged to forward any item on an Ex Cadet, former staff member from any of the three military colleges.  College number & photo will make our life a lot easier.  william.oliver@rmc.ca

Where are they now?  What are they doing?

From time to time, E-Veritas will focus on an Ex cadet; former staff member; and / or a friend of the college.   We get e-mails . . .

What a pleasant surprise to see Danny at the RMC weekend dinner dance last weekend.  He looked great and had bounce in his step just like in the old days.  I would like to thank you for arranging that he meets with the hockey and football players of class 66 present at the dinner dance.  It was a thrill for each and every one of us to chat with him and see how well he is.  He was inspiring when we were under his tutelage at the college and he remains our hero in many ways.  I for one owe him a lot.

As promised I am sending you photos taken with him.  The two football players of class 66 in the one photo with him are 6552 John Macko and 6549 Larry McCurdy.  The hockey players in the other photo taken with him are 6547 Peter Lloyd, 6875 Claude Maynard, 6810 Gilles Nappert and 6903 Terry Doyle.

Sorry for the delay in sending you these photos but my wife Suzette and I were vacationing this week with no Email connection.  We were honing our golf skills in Mont Tremblant – and need more practice!

Your e-version of the RMC Newsletter finds me in Edmonton, AB at a time when I'm transitioning from regular svc into corporate life, and I was warmed by nostalgia while reading the articles.  The staff is doing a tremendous job!

I would like to renew my membership, and wonder if you could please send me the information I would need ?

18804 James Michael Bourgeois (nee Bosley) (RMC ’93)

Ed note:  For James and all other readers who have been “thinking” of renewing or taking out a Club membership for the first time.  Call us toll free 1-888 386 3762 or go Online http://www.rmcclub.ca/Membership.htm     Members in good standing are our lifeline!  We don’t want to be accused (again) of “ranting” about memberships but really folks - we do require many more readers to step up to the plate

I just wanted to pass on that the "Tom Lawson" article about the on-base clinic in Trenton included two ex-cadets in the story. In addition to Tom Lawson, 11410 Al Sarsons is an esteemed member of the RMC Class of '77.  It was great to see him in the photo.

Keep up the excellent work on e-Veritas!

Front Row: 3058 Peter Hunter, 3100 Peter Ward, 3028 Dick Day, 3056 Barry Hercus, 3090 Dick Rutherford, 3086 Marv Rich, 2984 Glyn Osler, 2852 John Reiffenstein, 3175 Lorne Ursel, 3055 Tony Hampson.

The fifth annual "Norm Kerr Invitational" golf tournament was held again in the Orillia, Ontario area on September 13 and 14th.  The event included one day each at the beautiful Timber Ridge and Meadow Nest courses at the Hawk Ridge Golf & Country Club, an overnight room at the Highwayman Inn, both in Orillia and our class dinner at the McCabes Restaurant located next to the Highwayman Inn.

The "Invitational" is really an "open" to any Ex Cadet who entered either of the then two Military Colleges in 1948 and 1949.  This year a few non-golfers attended and we sincerely hope that many more non-golfers will attend.

This year the participants were as shown in the accompanying photograph.

Yours very truly,

3138 Norm Kerr (RMC ’53)

Follow-up from a letter sent to e-V 21

I can help with the request from Terry Shepard.

Terry doesn’t provide an email address, but Dr. David Rodger, General Elliott Rodger’s “younger” brother does, and he might provide additional information.  David is in my Rotary Club in Victoria, BC.  He also served as a Doctor in WWII, including in Burma, and he might have additional information on his brother.  I know the two brothers got together this spring in Montreal.  David’s email is derodger@hotmail.com and his phone no. is 250-385-1551.

 TDV,

8927 Patrick Hunt (RMC 71)

Interesting. I was not aware that Elliott had a younger brother.  His son, Elliott Jr. is a friend, and he has had great difficulty getting his father to talk about his war experiences.  Apparently his war journals went into the archives, and that is about it.  He also tried to get his father hooked up with a computer - no success, and hence no email address for him.

Perhaps David will know more - when I have a bit more time than I do this morning, I will send him an email.

Many thanks

Terry Shepard

Thanks for the great uplink on the flag issue through the Archives!  It's perfect - streaming videos just like we were there.  Hey, some of us really were, come to think about it!

For the LCG'06 voyage & crew, there will be no shortage of terrific photos and lots of opportunities during Legacy and Ex-cadet weekend.  If you can get Geoff Bennett, Piper "extraordinaire", The "Maj'" and Ross MacKenzie (Museum Curator) all together with the '45-49 Ensign (originated Whitehorse, YT), it seems to be timely for a 'Lest We Forget' tribute next month.

The photo in your link of Ensign, Piper and Pipes together near the Locks looks great, although there might be complaints from those Liberals who will pooh-pooh a story about old flags.  Having lived in California now for so long (& with an election based on good looks coming up) I may have gotten Whigs & Tories mixed up!  MacGregor will set me straight next visit for sure.

Trust all is well, thanks again & good luck in a busy week.

2006 Reunion Weekend was a winner in all respects. A successful R.W. requires the collective effort of everyone – military & civilian staffs; cadets; and visitors.

The support and goodwill of hundreds of dedicated members of the RMC extended family guaranteed a particular enjoyable weekend for returning Ex Cadets celebrating “reunion years” and family & friends of I Year cadets.

The weather was “on & off” for a good part of the weekend.  But when everything was wrapping up on Sunday around noon – the happy faces; handshakes; and hugs from those who traveled to Kingston and were now departing told the whole story!

Truly all involved had a great weekend!

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
